Why I don't gamble

I can honestly say I have not done any gambling, other than an occasionally lotto ticket or a raffle for a group I was part of for almost 40 years.

It might or might not be interesting, but the fact of the matter is that I have not gambled any real amount since about a year or so after I moved away from home at the age of 23. Up till then I lived with my mother, and commuted to college.

At that point, I moved about 80 miles away to another city where I found a job. I wasn't always sure what to do with all that freedom. It was certainly a change from living in my mother's house - where she definitely practiced the attitude of "as long as you live in MY house....". This is a style of child rearing that some of you may have been familiar with growing up.

Anyway, the car that I did have, I left with my mother because she had no other way to get around and lived out in the country. I had the city buses and it was just one transfer to get from work to my house.

However, being alone at home was not fun - so when I got downtown on the bus after work, I often would elect to stop off and hit some bars before taking a later bus on home. One of those bars featured an old pin-ball machine.

With little else to do, I played the pin ball machine until one week, I suddenly realized I had spend most of my bi-weekly check and had little to survive on for the next two weeks. This was not a pleasure experience.

I saw that gambling was not the way to go, and like I said except for an occasional purchase of a lotto title and one or twice a raffle ticket, I haven't gambled again to this day.

Who says you can't learn a lesson quickly?! :)

Money in gambling can go very quickly. I have gone gambling with BF's and they get hooked and spend way too much. I can take just a certain amount and enjoy myself. It can be scary.
