A short guide to help people gain an advantage when betting on Sport.

1. Golden Rule of Betting

Don't bet what your head can't afford to lose. A simple theory, but some people get carried away whilst betting. Always prepare yourself to lose your stake money. If you would be really annoyed at losing that money, stake a smaller amount.

2. Avoid large numbers of selections in accumulators

Accumulators are very popular bets in sport. Many people chose anywhere from 5 to 10 selections. These bets are encouraged by the bookmakers because they are very hard to win on. Try choosing just 3 selections. This is still hard but you'll achieve more success.

3. Avoid Cup competitions or Friendlies

Cup betting can be very hard to predict in any sport. You can never be sure whether all the teams have the desire to win the competition. Some teams may be concentrating on League performance, seeing Cup progression as a secondary achievement. Also the odds offered by bookmakers don't represent great value.

Friendlies are also best avoided. When a sporting event has no significant meaning, teams may not play to their full potential.

4.Remember David versus Goliath

When top placed teams play bottom placed teams, it looks a formality on paper. This is not always the case, especially when the lower ranked team is at home. The lower placed team will see this as their biggest game of the season, and raise there game. Coupled with complacency of the top higher placed opposition, shock results happen.

5. Don't be scared to back the Draw (Football betting)

How many times does your bet go down because of a draw. Many of us look at a fixture and choose a home or away win, but remember there are three outcomes, not two! Draws occur on a regular occasion, so don't be afraid to bet on them. Also you normally get around 2/1, which represents great value.

6. Don't let your heart rule your head!

Be wary when betting on a team or player you support. You will mostly have a biased outlook on the outcome.

7. Home advantage

Statistics prove to us home teams are more likely to win. There are many reasons for this i.e. familiar surroundings, the crowd, and less distance to travel. I'm not saying don't bet on away teams because they can provide excellent value at times, but bare this in mind.

8. Nothing to play for?

Towards the end of regular seasons some games will have very little meaning. Avoid these fixtures! When a season is near its end, choose games were something is at stake.
This can also apply in tournaments in sports such as tennis or golf, in particular tournaments prior to a major competition. Top players are less likely to give 100% in a warm up tournament because of the threat of injury, and will want to be fresh for the next tournament.

9. Previous history and/or injuries

Before making your mind up on a particular outcome look at previous results when the two have met before. This can often provide positive clues to the outcome.
Also take time to look at team news. People often walk into a bookmakers and bet blind. Doing five minutes of research before hand can be very helpful.

10. Bet for the enjoyment

Like any bet you place, not just on sports, do it for the enjoyment. I agree we all bet to win money, but don't see betting as a way of making money. If you win it's a bonus, but don't get carried away.
