A look at online sportsbook Ladbrokes - one of the top UK bookmakers.

Foreword

Ladbrokes is one of the larger online sportsbooks, and for good reason. They are one of the UK's biggest bookmakers and have been around for ever, in internet terms. But being old doesn't necessarily mean being good.

So is Ladbrokes an online betting site worth your time? Read on to find out.

A History of Ladbrokes

Ladbrokes is astoundingly old. As in, they are over a century old. Ladbrokes was founded in 1886 to take bets on horse racing. They catered to the upper class and the aristocrats who wanted to bet but didn't want to deal with the common rabble. As an interesting aside, Ladbrokes was also markedly progressive for its time. Their racetrack representative was a woman, something that no other firms dared do.

Ladbrokes stayed this way well into the 1950's, when it was acquired by Mark Stein. At this point the company had fallen into disrepair following the second World War.

The company was one of the first to take advantage of the legalization of betting shops, opening a string of them in 1960's following the 1961 Act. That put them in a position to explode, and explode they did. By 1993 the company was valued at 2 billion euros on the London stock exchange. Not bad for a company that had been on the verge of collapse.

Ladbrokes remains one of the largest betting companies in the UK to this day, thanks to their extensive online betting system and string of stores. Ladbrokes operates over 2,400 stores and employs 14,000 people.

Ladbrokes Sportsbook

Most online sportsbooks are largely the same outside of how the page looks. Ladbrokes does manage to distinguish itself a bit as a brick and mortar, but online they are just another site.

And that being said the Ladbrokes online betting site feels like a throwback to an earlier time, a time when web design didn't yet have a design language. The site is hardly a horror of flashing lights and clashing colors, but it does feel a bit amateurish in this modern age.

That aside however Ladbrokes does offer the most comprehensive betting in the UK. They cover all the basic sports, of course. There is football, horse racing (from all over the world), MMA, cricket, rugby, and just about every other sports covered. They even provide you with live streams of football and horse races, if you are registered. That's something that most other sites can't offer.

The site may not be pretty, but it does its job. Placing a bet is simple enough, and they handily provide you with a table of all the current odds. Just click on the one you want to make a bet.

Verdict

As one of the oldest bookmakers Ladbrokes has built a reputation and trust which are hard to match by many newer bookmakers. Together with the wide coverage of betting markets by its online sportsbook and the reasonable £50 free bet for new accounts this online bookmaker can definitely be recommended.

Great review of Ladbrokes, we do not have anything of that sort where I am in Canada.
