As well as knowing the basic rules and house rules of playing Blackjack, it is a good idea to learn some of the strategies of the game.

A couple of strategies used when playing Blackjack.

There have been many people who have played and studied the game of Blackjack since the game was first developed. Some people have worked at learning and perfecting different strategies to win, such as counting cards. However, in order to count cards the player must know how many decks are being used and be able to keep track of which cards have been played. The number of players in a Blackjack game has a baring on how the cards are counted. Generally a Blackjack game will have from one to nine players depending on how the table is laid out and what the house rules will allow. Another strategy involves mathematics which works hand in hand with card counting.

Knowing what the odds are of losing a hand by taking a hit can be of help as long as the player pays attention to the total points they have in their hand. It is not a good idea to take another card if the player is holding twenty because the odds of getting an ace because the odds are ninety-two per cent that they will bust. However, if a player is holding an ace the odds of busting is zero per cent because the highest card they may draw would be a ten or face card which would give the player their twenty-one for a winning hand.

Odds of busting if a hit is taken

Hand Value % Bust If You Hit
21 100%
20 92%
19 85%
18 77%
17 69%
16 62%
15 58%
14 56%
13 39%
12 31%
11 or Less 0%

There have been several systems developed over the years that some people believe helps them to win more often. It is not difficult to tell if a player is using one of the systems by watching how they place their bets.

A couple of strategies used when playing Blackjack.

The Paroli Betting System is done by making a small wager on the first hand, if the player wins he/she will increase the wager on the next hand. A player must decide how many hands he/she will continue increasing their wager before they start over. As an example a player may increase their wagers for three consecutive winning hands then start over with whatever their original wager was on the fourth hand. However, if a player does not have a winning hand they will continue to make small wagers until they do win. The way this works is if a player bets five dollars on the first hand and wins he/she may increase the next bet to ten dollars, if they win the second hand the bet increases to twenty dollars, but when the fourth hand is played the player will drop back to the first hand bet of five dollars.

One of the most common systems used by Blackjack players is the Martingale system. With this system the player bets whatever the minimum bet is and if he/she loses they double the bet on the next hand. The player can continue doing this until they lose a hand at which time they return to the original bet.
Most gamblers do not consider this system to be a good system because it is not uncommon for a player to lose several consecutive hands before they finally win. Betting using this system can become expensive in a very short time.
