Dr. Fager was foaled (born) in the spring of 1964 at Tartan Farms located in Ocala, Florida, William McKnight owed 75% of him and Mr. Nerud his trainer owned the other 25% of him but that remained a secret until long after Tartan and McKnight became just a memory. Dr. Fager was named after the surgeon who saved the life of Mr. Nerud after his pony Thunder, who I also rode threw him and at the time trainers weren't required to wear hemets.

Dr. Charles Fager

Shortly afterwards Mr. Nerud wife Charlotte noticed her husband wasn't himself so they contacted the famed neurologist and he was rushed to Boston and none to soon as it were, as soon as Dr. Fager examined his new patient even though he had a prior engagement that evening he aborted them and peformed an immediate operation on Mr. Nerud that consequently saved his life. In appreciation Mr. Nerud while sitting in his hospital gown asked his savor for permission to name a horse after him and so he agreed and scribbled his name on a piece of paper and never though about it again until Fager made his astonishing debut winning by twelve lengths first time out as a two year old.

The Reign of Dr. Fager

Dr. Fager ran four times as a two year old winning three times and was defeated once by champion two year old Successor, later that year he was shipped to Hialeah where he prepared for his three year old campaign where he would encounter future 1967 Horse of the Year Damascus. Their rivalry became one of the most thrilling of all times during the four times they met. Damascus was never able to defeat Fager on his own but with the aid of a rabbit, Hedavar who set blazing early fractions to tire out Dr. Fager so Damascus could come from behind and defeat a weary horse but in the 1968 Suburban there was a late scratch and Hedavar was declared form the race. Well now the 1967 Horse of the Year Damascus would attempt to tackle the ultra game and rapid invincible Dr. Fager on his own, so their at the gate and all in and the doors spring open and the great Dr. Fager busts out the gate and gains the lead but for long until Damascus jockey knows he can not let Dr. Fager get an easy half mile and so he attempts to close the gape but Dr. Fager still has to much air in his tank and sprints away again leaving Damascus behind but he is not through yet and gives it one final try but Dr. Fager win not yield and wins easily but returns to the winner circle a very tried but triumphant winner, my favorite race of the invincible Dr. Fager

Horse of the Year 1968

They say that during the racing seaon of 1968 was the single most exciting campaign any horse ever accomplshed in the history of American horse racing, I agree and after viewing video of this titan he still leaves me breathless, alway a fierce competitor this superstar could not, would not tolerate another horse in front of him, no matter the surface or the weight they backed on him he ran even faster, he and his trainer have ALWAYS been my hero and I chose well ! Dr. Fager's last race, the Vosburg he toted an astonishing 139 lbs ovethe glib strip equaling the track record before retiring to Tartan Farms nd stud duty. He died an untimely death at the age of twelve, te following year he became the nations leading stallion.
