The ASPCA is now fighting to get new and stronger laws in place to protect horses and riders from catastrophic breakout which can often lead to death and serious injuries to both the horses and their riders because horse trainers have no regard for their horses welfare or the riders and do anything to win.

The Old Days of Horse Racing

Long before these modern days of racing, doping the race horses using such medicines as Lasix which also masks the traces of other drugs in the horses system so the horse gets by the morning veterinarian inspection before the state veterinarians, all of this was happening on the west coast long before I had finally moved to California back in 1978 and was exposed to the lacked medication rules in place outside New York where they are much more strict and difficulty to get by the state vets that recently would not let Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness winner I'll Have Anothers (2012) trainer, drug hopping Doug O'Neil or as some people call him Drug O'Neil because he has had so many positive blood and urine tests that are taken on each horse that wins and also any other random horse they choose to test.
Finally as a punishment Doug O'Neil was suspended for a mere forty five days for to many positive test which is nothing, unlike trainer Patrick Biancone, trainer of the great European mare All Along and Sagace who won the highly coveted Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1983 and 1984 who was suspended for doping his horses with Cobra venom, a neurotoxin that is injected into the joint and is a powerful pain killer for two years. When trainers dope their horses its not just the pain killers that are dangerous but combined with the tapping of the horses joints, knees , ankles and even their hocks that are located in there lower hind legs the joint above the hind ankles just usually a day or two before there scheduled race. This highly dangerous practice endangers both horse and rider and also every other horse and jockey that competes in their race.

Tapping the Horse

Tapping a horse which is inserting a needle into the horses joints and then injecting acid or cortisone that eventually eats away at the joint as it is used over and over every time the horse races weakening the joint and also drying out the joint of natural synovial fluid that keeps the joint lubricated, sometimes that fluid builds up and it is natures way of telling the horse there is a problem and not to run so hard so they stick needles into that area withdrawing this important fluid that should be thin and clear if the fluid comes out with blood mixed in with it that is usually an indication of fracture of some sort but of course that does not deter the trainer to back off this horse, no instead they will drop them in class hoping to win another race before the horse breaks completely down and also hopes that the horse gets claimed by another unsuspecting trainer thinking he is making a shrewd claim but instead is claiming a doomed horse destined for the killers or worse.

John Sadler

This trainer in particular I have known since I arrived in California back in the late 1970's who at the time was assistant trainer to David Hoffman and was stabled next to my boyfriends barn at the time and since then Mr. Sadler has gone on to be one of the most influential trainers in southern California and is President of the trainers in southern California, he is currently training a very large string of horses consisting of over 100 horses or more and incidentally was my last employer on the race track when I finally threw in the towel in this now crooked sport of the doomed " Sport of Kings" that has finally lost all its integrity, example the very first horse I ponyed for him was a former Robert Frankel horse named Moonshine Alice who could barely walk out of her stall and is why she was ponyed, ponying is exercising the horse with the aid of another horse and rider, me that leads the race horse to the track without a rider and then proceeds to trot or canter around the track very slowly finally loosing up the horse. two days before Alice was entered to run after tapping her ankles yet again and walking one day and the morning of her race John called me and told me to take her down to the training track early and trot her around a couple of times to loosen her up and mainly to get her by the state vet and in fact she passed the state vet, ran and mercifully didn't break down in the race but got claimed and never raced again. Moonshine Alice was one of the lucky ones because she still had residual value as a potential broodmare unlike a gelding or cheap colt.

Pathfork, Champion two year old in Ireland 2010

The Irish undefeated champion Pathfork, ranked 5th worldwide in 2010 was sent to America and John W Sadler because even though Pathfork was a brilliant two year old he also became a bleeder and in Ireland the horses are not permitted to run on Lasix in Europe, Lasix draws all the excess fluid out of the animals body minimizing the risks of bleeding from the horse nasal passages and capillary break down causing it difficulty breathing because the horses wind pipe is filling up with blood and it can also flow out its nostrils in extreme cases and also down into their lungs reducing the horses breathing capacity .
Pathfork was a beautiful colt by Distorted Humor out of a Sadlers Wells mare and John being a top horseman did everything possible to reduce dust intake by bedding the horse down on this newspaper type special bedding much less dusty than shavings and even the dustier straw and also sprinkling water on the horses hay that consisted only of timothy hay, alfalfa hay that is richer and the horses like more but it also aggravates and contributes to the bleeding problems but in the end even with all of these precautions in place Pathfork never did show much while racing in the United States and was eventually returned to Europe where he was later retired to stud duty at Highland's Stud Farm in South Africa.

The Racing Hall of Fame

This is strictly my opinion but any trainer that continually drugs and has their horse come up positive should be stripped of their Hall of Fame status for example Bob Baffert and put into the Hall of Shame, who made headlines after several his horses died mysteriously and is still under federal investigation, the Hall of fame is suppose to be given to those for outstanding achievements and like the Olympics where drugs are not tolerated and if found present the winners are stripped of their honors, medals and disgraced and so should those trainers that cheat to win !

I do not know much about this but my wife does and says that in the USA some tracks, particularly the QH tracks, in some states are really bad with trainers using all sorts of weird stuff on the poor horses so the horses run and hurt themselves because they cannot feel they are in pain. Horrible.
