An Overview of the World Series of Poker

The World Series of Poker, otherwise known as the WSOP, is the biggest poker tournament. Held in Las Vegas, since 1971, it is a poker world title.

Now the World Series of Poker includes 55 events, including most variants of poker. From Texas hold em, to Omaha and Seven-card stud. Now the WSOP also includes HORSE and SHOE for poker rounds. Essentially, these are mixed games of poker including the likes of Texas hold em, and Omaha. The Main Event of the WSOP is no-limit Texas hold em poker.

The WSOP has a buy in of up to $10,000 dollars with the Main Event. However, it is possible to qualify for the WSOP via smaller satellite competitions. These have smaller buy-ins, and winners gain automatic entry to the WSOP.

Currently, Harrah Entertainment sponsor the tournament. Harrah Entertainment provides coverage of the WSOP, along with ESPN, and hold circuits at its venues.

ESPN has provided most of the television coverage of the WSOP. Now it includes the preliminary rounds as well as the Main Event.

Sponsors like Miller's Brewing, Bluff magazine and Pro Cards also provide marketing of the tournament. Licensees have allowed for The World Series of Poker video games on platforms like the Nintendo GameCube and Microsoft Xbox.

Winners of the WSOP Main Event receive a gold bracelet, along with the prize funds. A gallery of Champions also displays previous and current winners of the tournament.

Highlights have included multiple winners of the bracelet. The likes of Phil Hellmuth have acquired eleven in total. Likewise, there have been multiple winners of the Main Event like Johnny Moss.

A Player of the Year award is also a new addition to the tournament. Here, the player who accumulates the most points during the series receives the award.

The number of competition entrants has increased. Now there is an estimated 23,000 contestants overall. In the Main Event, it has been estimated up to around 8,773. However, this has recently dropped off slightly to an average of 6,000. Still, the original Main Event only had six!

Now, the tournament also has a World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE). This obviously has European players and it is based in Europe. The competition, like the American counterpart, includes a bracelet for the winner.

The tournament is now recognized in the game of poker as the biggest in the game. With ESPN, and Harrah behind it, in addition to open participation, the World Series of Poker will undoubtedly continue to attract players seeking the best of poker.
