Massive multiplayer online games can be a great source of fun, but if they are played in excess, they can cause addictions.

MMO, MMORPG

The expression massive multiplayer online, or MMO, refers to games that can be played at a large scale, featuring a big number of players who join the same virtual world simultaneously. MMO’s exist for more than twenty years and now, they became more popular than ever. I have been a player myself and I must admit: there is a lot of excitement, but as any other thing, it can become toxic if people exaggerate with it.

Most players feel the taste of the first online game when a friend tells them about it. World of Warcaft, the most popular MMO with role playing game characteristics, or MMORPG, was released more than five years ago and it still has millions of players worldwide. The game requires a monthly subscription to be paid, in order to enter the servers and its value is of around twelve dollars.

One of the things that attract people to buy a subscription for MMORPG’s is the fun they provide. In most of these games, people can create a custom character from a zero point and take him/her to various adventures for gaining money, resources, clothes and weapons, for constant improvement. The final purpose is to join groups of players that could fight the toughest monsters in the game, or people could join various factions (guilds) and battle against other factions for supremacy.

The time that individuals have to invest for developing their characters can be much, because massive multiplayer online games can be very complex and the virtual worlds are usually large. For these reasons, people who have more free time could really enjoy such games, while others may advance slowly.

There are private servers and they require no charge, but they can be full of bugs and glitches. Also, there are free MMO’s which do not require a subscription, but they can have poor quality and even if they are well made, they require people to buy items from their item shops for getting the maximum fun from the game.

Some individuals are so obsessed with an online game that they play more than 8 hours every day. There are facts that can prove these video productions are addictive. Staying too long in a virtual world can lead to disorientation in the real world, dizziness, responsibility problems, insomnia, etc.

Moderate play can bring many benefits, like relaxation, enjoyment, adrenaline and the brain capacity can be developed. Massive multiplayer online games can be a wonderful thing, as they can help people release stress by evading in a virtual world. However, too much playing can lead to obsessions and addiction.
